This ancient Roman villa that dates back to the 1st century BC and belonged to the Roman Senator Quinto Assio is set in Grotte di San Nicola, an ancient Roman complex of monuments consisting of villas and spa buildings. This is an area in the nature reserve of the two Lazio lakes, Lungo and Ripasottile, near Rieti, 45 minutes north-east of Rome.
The villa is in the process of being carefully renovated into a luxurious 3-bed home. Traditional and local products are being used in keeping with the original villa, while incorporating all the modern-day comforts, such as gas central heating.
The stonework is left bare on the outside while internally the walls are being covered in stucco and some floors will be paved with mosaics. The beams are local cedar.
